Mother's Day is coming up very quickly. If you are like many people, you are still trying to decide on a gift. A perfect gift you could make your Mom is a garden bed! These are very easy to make and they help improve access as well as keeping unwanted animals out. This will be a step by step guide on how to make a raised garden.

Step 1: Acquire untreated wood boards. We used ten 2 x 4 x 10 boards.

Step 2: Measure and cut the length of the wall and cut the boards. Then measure and cut a board to the height of the box, it will be the support.

Step 3: Making the walls: stack the boards that were cut for the walls to the desired height of the garden. We made ours 3 boards high.

Step 4: Screw the support boards into the ends of the walls to make the corner posts.

Step 5: Screw all of the walls together.

Step 6: Use any remaining support blocks to add additional support to you box.

Step 7: Set the box into place. It is important to pick a place that offers plenty of sunlight for optimal growth.

Step 8: Remove the grass from this area and loosen the dirt using a spading fork. This will allow the roots from the plant to grow deeply into the ground.

Step 9: Staple wide-mesh hardware cloth into the bottom of the frame. This will keep the weeds out but allow earthworms to come in. This will allow the soil to be as fertile as possible and still keep weeds out.

Step 10: To help keep your wood form rotting, it is a smart idea to install a heavy-duty plastic liner along the inside of the walls. This will prevent moisture from rotting away the wood from the inside.

Step 11: Add a mixture of nutrient-rich soil and compost. Also consider what you are planting. If it is a plant like aloe vera, it is best to add a cactus specific soil mixture.

Step 12: Now, add your plants. It is best to give the plants room to grow and not overcrowd.

Step 13: Watering is the next step. It is best to water in the morning so the sun evaporates less. You can also install a water timer to automatically water your plants and make it easier.

Step 14: You can add a mesh cover to the top of the bed to keep birds and other unwanted animals out. You could also add garden trellis around your garden to grow vines and tall plants.

This will make a perfect gift for Moms everywhere. It costs about $120 to build. The great thing about this gift is that it can be used for many years to come. It can grow fresh vegetable for you and your family. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms! I hope you enjoy the garden!
