Smart Homes are a hot topic right now. Many people want products in their home that make their lives easier. The majority of people think that smart homes are way too expensive to create, but in reality, it doesn't take much to create an impressive smart home setup. In this article, I will introduce some of the products that can give you your smart home without hurting your bank account.

Hub

The hub is the brains of your home. There are 2 main home hub producers, Google and Amazon. Both of these hubs have their pros and cons. Hubs act as assistants that can tell you calendar events, weather, traffic conditions, and much more. They are useful even with other smart home devices.

Google

Google's hub is one of the most popular hubs available. They offer a few different hubs, that include the Google Nest, Home, and Mini. Google's best feature is that it connects to the Google ecosystem of apps. It also supports 30,000 different devices and 1,000 services. This large number means almost all smart devices work with these hubs. Google offers a smart home app for most smartphones on the market today. This app means that you can control your smart home remotely. The hub we recommend from Google is the Google Home Mini, due to its price, compact size, and that does not compromise its music quality. You can buy one for around $30 at Walmart and it will easily be able to control your smart home.

Amazon

The next option for a smart hub is with Amazon. Amazon offers the Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Studio, Echo Plus, and the Echo Show. The great thing about the Amazon hub is that it works with all of the Amazon features. In addition to being able to control your home, you can also purchase your regular items from Amazon with your voice. There are currently 100,000 different devices that can be connected to Alexa. This number is over three times the amount of the Google Home which is very useful when trying to connect an array of devices. Amazon also offers a smartphone app that allows you to control your home remotely. The device we recommend is the Echo Dot, which comes in around $45 on Amazon. The Echo Dot compact size and decent price make it a great product if you do not want to spend a ton of money. For about $10 extra, you can get a dot with a clock built in which is a really cool feature.

Lights

Lights are an easy way to turn any home into a serious smart home. With smart lights, you can change the brightness, color, and settings with the sound of your voice, or even better, automatically with preset scenes. There are thousands of different smart lights, but I will just share my recommendations and what to avoid.

Philips Hue

Philips Hue lights seem to own the game in the smart light world. But is there anything special with these bulbs? According to many people, these bulbs are over priced. And it is easy to see with the price tag being $170 for the starter kit that only includes 3 bulbs. Each bulb after is around $50 dollars each. This is a outrageous price if you are trying to put these lights throughout your home. So does that mean smart lights are out of the picture? Absolutely not!

Generic Smart Lights

If you really want to get more bang for your buck, I would suggest a generic smart light bulb. Amazon has over 20,000 smart lights and many of them are less than $20 per bulb. I would also suggest a bulb that does not need a separate hub. This limits the need for extra devices to avoid clutter and unnecessary devices. If you want to spice up your lighting situation, you can also purchase LED light strips that can attached to the backs of TV's or other devices to impress your guests and give a futuristic look.

Vacuums

One of the most useful smart home devices is a smart vacuum. If you forgot to clean your floors before guests come over, it comes in handy to be able to start your vacuum from your smart home app or with the sound of your voice.

iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba is one of the most popular smart vacuums, and for a good reason. They are one of the best vacuums on the market. They offer a superior cleaning experience. The one downside is the price. It is not uncommon to spend $800 for one. To be fair, there are some that are around $250 but they do not have some of the key features needed like remote start. So, if you are willing to pay a hefty price to receive amazing features, I would suggest this product.

ECOVACS DEEBOT

The ECOVACS DEEBOT is a great product for buyers not looking to spend much money. These are great vacuums that have the basic features to make your floors look spotless. These vacuums are available on Amazon for about $160. This is the option we recommend for people who do not want to spend much money on their vacuum but still want the benefits of a smart vacuum.

Security Systems

Most popular security companies offer a smart system that connects to your smart home. This allows you to be able to arm and check your home from your bed or remotely from your phone. This adds peace of mind to home owners and is a wonderful smart products to invest in.

SimpliSafe

SimpliSafe is a wonderful security system that provides peace of mind to a homeowner. Their optional 24/7 professional monitoring can contact the police, fire, and medical dispatchers to your home in case there is an accident. SimpliSafe has a 12 piece package that has 1 camera, 5 door/window sensors, 2 alarms, and 1 panic button. This package is available for around $400 on Amazon. This is a great product that can help protect your home, family, and belongings.

ADT and Others

If you already own a security system that is not a smart device, contact your security company to see if they offer any smart devices that you can upgrade to. Also check out our article on other ways to protect your home from security threats.

Conclusion

As can be observed, it is not terribly expensive to create a high-tech smart home. With these products, you get a personal assistant, enhanced lights, clean floors, and an amazing security system; all of which can be controlled from your phone or voice. These products give you an intelligent home that you do not have to break the bank on. With the exceptions of the hub and vacuum, all of these items can be purchased over long periods of time, meaning you can slowly turn your whole house into a smart home starting with one room at a time.
